Work at Home Scams - Learn What to Look For
By Debra Gropp
You are searching for legitimate work at home jobs on the Internet. You find thousands of ads for work at home opportunities making enticing promises. Before you think seriously about investing your time and money, proceed with caution. Most work at home opportunities are at worst, scams, and at best, questionable.
The vast majority of the advertisements for these opportunities deliberately omit certain facts, and include only the information that will draw your attention. They fail to mention the cost requirements such as start-up fees, placing newspaper ads, and buying office supplies. Many people lose thousands of dollars plus their time and energy because they fall prey to these schemes.
How do you avoid the scams and find legitimate online work? The first and most important rule is to proceed with great caution. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Never fall for the easy money trap. A home business is the same as any other business. It requires hard work, time, a good product, and perseverance.
Avoid the following common work at home scams:
*Sites That Offer Thousands of Dollars in a Very Short Time: There are thousands of these websites all over the Internet. They make incredible promises of money for doing little or no work. Beware of anything that makes unrealistic promises like this. People who are desperately searching for extra ways to make money are the ones who are most likely to fall for these scams. If it sounds too good to be true, move on.
*Pyramid Schemes: Many illegal pyramid schemes whose primary goal is to recruit others into the program, instead of selling the product, can resemble legitimate MLM programs. Multi-level marketing is a business primarily based on direct sales, not recruiting. In pyramid schemes, everything eventually collapses because the market becomes saturated. The only people who ever make money are the ones at the top.
Legitimate multi-level marketing is a business based on direct sales. It is a solid, well-established, legal form of business that has provided profit for many people who have successfully sold products for reputable companies.
*Data Entry: These website promise you can make thousands of dollars simply by typing in a few lines of text on a form. If it were this easy, don’t you think everyone would be doing it? The reality is you must promote a website, receive lots of traffic, hope that someone actually clicks on your ad, and then actually purchases the product you are promoting.
If you find yourself interested in a home-based opportunity, acquire as much information as possible about the company. Be very clear in your questions regarding the costs involved. A legitimate company will have no problem with providing answers to your questions concerning costs, work involved, etc.
If you do invest in a work at home opportunity and discover that it is not legitimate, contact the company and ask for a refund. If they will not honor your request, find out the physical address and make a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
It can be very beneficial for you to spend some time researching genuine work at home opportunities. There are many resources available that list legitimate companies that hire people to work from home. A very good source is to search for large company and corporate websites (Microsoft, IBM, Hewlitt-Packard, Disney, etc.). Most major stores, companies or corporations have websites. If they have a website, there will be a link for jobs.
Make sure you search online general employment sites (jobs.com, monster.com, careerbuilder.com, online-jobs.com, etc.). There are scores of websites for general job searches and there are always some home-based jobs listed.
You can also search for online affiliate programs. There are many to choose from. Make sure you stay away from the ones that require an investment. You can earn a nice income from working as an affiliate if you devote the time and commitment necessary to the programs you choose.
Many legitimate home-based opportunities are available, but you must spend some time and effort locating them. Always remember, if you are unsure about an opportunity, ask questions. You will not know if something is a possibility for you unless you get answers to your questions. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, IT PROBABLY IS.
