Medical transcription has been around for a long time. In the 1950’s and 1960s, hospitals would employ hoards of young women to do only transcriptions. They would sit in a large room with dozens of manual typewriters, tape recorders, and headphones, transcribing all the doctors’ notes and observations.

All the patient rounds, consultations, and other correspondence were recorded and the tapes sent off to the “transcription department.” There the tapes were converted into documents for insertion into patients’ permanent medical records. If needed, these type written transcripts could be used for legal purposes. If it was written, then legally, it was said.

One would have thought that by now, there would be some other way of doing this, but alas, it is mostly still the same. Only now, the medical coders, transcribers, and other workers in that sort of field are contractors. This has opened up a whole new type of contract employee: the medical transcriptionist, and there are community colleges and other private institutions who train in this work, and whose graduates are widely sought after and valued.
